Liftmaster VS Genie

LiftMaster vs GENIE

The battle is on! Who will stand on top! Unfortunately we can’t actually throw the two openers in a ring and watch them go at it. Umm… maybe we could get some representatives from the company…wait…that’s another blog.

When trying to choose the right opener for you there are a lot of things to consider. Maybe you’re like me a do not like to spend a dime BUT still want the best bang for your buck. Over the next couple days I am going to gather the good, the bad and the ugly or each brand.

We are going to examine the features of each product, DIY rating (How easy is it for the average Joe to install, fix and maintain) and of course price.

ROUND 1 – Pricing

It seems that the second thing we look at when looking for a product, no matter what it is, is the price. We tend to go “Ooooh, that’s nice…(then glance down at the price tag)…ummm…..let me think…” All of us have been there, whether buying the big screen TV or a bag of chips at the corner store. That is why the first thing I want to clear the air with is the price. When taking a first glance at the 1/2 HP garage door openers, you will notice that the price range for the GENIE overhead door openers ranges from $133 t0 $196 USD. While the LiftMaster garage door openers ranges from $140 to $280 USD. Though not a huge difference in price it’s good to have that out in the open.

ROUND 2 – Functions

The battle is on! Well when we compare the functions that are offered between both garage door openers. I know what you are thinking… it is a garage door opener, you push the button it opens, you type the code it opens. Well not anymore, I am sorry GENIE you took a hard hit with this one, since the release of the MyQ technology (introduced by LiftMaster), LiftMaster has an arm up on this one. (Learn about it more here http://bit.ly/xmsCQi ). This is an app that actually makes opening and closing your garage door fun!

Out of the few different makes of garage door opener/operator on the market. Which brand gives the best bang for the buck, and how do you choose? The two main companies are Chamberlain, manufacturer of the LiftMaster brand and The Overhead Door Company, owner of The Genie Company. It’s estimated that these two brands make up 90% of garage door opener/operator in use today in the United States.

Let’s compare safety, security, warranty and price, reliability, and service/repair cost.

    Safety: LiftMaster
Genie: has a Safe-T-Beam® built into the garage door opener to prevent the door from closing when an obstruction is in the door’s path.
LiftMaster: has The Protector System®, which is also an infrared safety reversing system that protects from an obstruction. The LiftMaster also has an automatic safety reverse/automatic door stop, which provides two additional forms of protection from a moving garage door. It reverses automatically if obstruction is encountered when being closed or being opened. The door can also be stopped or locked at any height for ventilation purposes.

    Security:
Genie: has Intellicode® rolling code technology which automatically changes your access code every time you push the remote control button.
LiftMaster: has a similar Patented Security+® rolling code technology, which offers the exact same security. Additionally, LiftMaster has PosiLock®, which electronically secures a closed door and monitors against the door ever being manually forced opened. The LiftMaster brand also has temporary password options for the Keyless Entry System so you can provide a temporary password for family, friends or service people without revealing your private password. This feature can be programmed for limited number of uses and a time limit.

    Warranty/Price:
Both Genie and LiftMaster openers have similar warranties.
The prices for both brands are about the same for similar models of each.

    Reliability:
Both Genie and LiftMaster are known for their high quality and reliability. However, LiftMaster models are more commonly used, recommended and regarded as the better choice for reliability. Consumer Reports has listed LiftMaster openers higher than Genie brands for the past five years.

    Service/Repair Cost:
The average cost of a garage door opener service in K.C. MO. is Genie $206.00 and Liftmaster $125.00
This average was calculated by getting bids from 12 different garage door companies in the K.C area throwing out the lowest and highest and averaging the rest.
